A Few days left and it's Christmas time!
It’s our favorite season of the year as this is the time when we receive and give love and presents to our loved ones. This is also an exciting time for K-pop fans as it marks the season for back-to-back year end awards and festival performances from their idols. What’s more, idols sometimes surprise their fans with Christmas content and release of new Christmas songs. While we wait for the most anticipated holiday of the year, here’s some songs that can accompany you to your Christmas countdown.
1. GOT7 - Confession Song
For us Filipinos, Christmas is mostly celebrated with our families. However, in Korea, it is usually celebrated with friends and lovers. Confession is a perfect song for those who are still single and want to celebrate Christmas with their crush. This is such a cute and lovely song that makes you want to confess your feelings to the person you like. The vibe is very Christmassy, as they used sleigh bells as an instrument. If you’re looking for a sign, this is your sign to confess to your crush before Christmas—GOT7’s Confession has got you covered!
2. EXO - The First Snow
If Filipinos have Jose Mari Chan's Christmas in our Hearts, Koreans and K-Pop fans have EXO's The First Snow. As Christmas draws nearer, The First Snow starts trending again and climbs up the music charts. In contrast to the happy vibe of Christmas, the song is actually about reminiscing about an old lover, filled with regret, and imagining meeting them again during the holiday season. The First Snow is just one of EXO's masterpieces from their special winter album, 'Miracle in December.' You might want to add the whole album to your Christmas playlist, too!
3. TWICE - Merry & Happy
Merry & Happy is like a sister song to TWICE's popular track Hear Shaker. The song captures the true spirit of Christmas. It's about a person who always spends Christmas alone, to the point where it feels even emptier as December approaches. Then one day, she found a special person (either a friend or lover), and Christmas finally became merry and happy for her. I really love this song as it shows that spending Christmas with your loved ones is the main reason why we celebrate it.
4. Stray Kids - Christmas EveL
Christmas EveL is not your typical Christmas song that sounds mellow and lovely. Stray Kids is well known for their noise music and Christmas EveL is not an exception. This song is a bop song that will make you dance and party. In the music video, Santa loses his voice due to an attack from a sound monster's attack, so Stray Kids need to work as Santa's substitute. With that, the song is all about hating Christmas and just being real. From the freezing cold weather, struggling to walk through the snow, the chaotic and noisy environment, increased traffic during the season, to the fact that Santa isn't real! Christmas EveL is just one of their masterpieces from their single winter album of the same name. I also highly recommend adding Winter Falls and 24 to 25 to your Christmas playlist.
5. NCT Dream - JOY
As part of SM Station, NCT Dream gave fans a gift with their JOY MV. It is a revision of two popular Christmas songs Jingle Bells and Joy to the World. This song is special to both NCT Dream and NCTzens as Mark personally wrote the rap part. True to its title, the song is a perfect addition to your Christmas playlist, bringing joy with its classic and upbeat music.
6. The Boyz - Christmassy!
The Boyz debuted in the month of December, and as a gift to their fans, they released the song Christmassy!. It's such a cute song that's heart-fluttering and full of love. The lyrics show how nervous they were when they first met their fans. From that day on, every December feels even more special and Christmassy for them. Oh, to be loved by your idols the way The Boyz love their TheB.
7. NMIXX - Funky Glitter Christmas
NMIXX is well known for their mix-pop genre; however, Funky Glitter Christmas is not your standard carol music, featuring an upbeat and fun sound. Throughout the song, you can hear Christmas classical melodies, making it sound familiar. Also, NMIXX showcases their beautiful singing voices here, proving that they are one of the best 4th-gen groups when it comes to vocals. A little TMI, this is also Jinni's last song before she officially leaves the group.
8. Red Velvet, Aespa - Beautiful Christmas
For SM stans, this might be one of the best collaborations of all time. Red Velvet and Aespa showcase their fresh vocals in a carol dance song that's perfect to add to your Christmas playlist. The song is all about the excitement leading up to Christmas Day while reminiscing about past years. The girls invite us to have a beautiful Christmas with our precious loved ones. This sweet message is perfectly conveyed by our sweetest girls.
9. BtoB - The Winter's Tale
When it comes to vocals, we can't overlook BtoB. Even though the title of the song is The Winter's Tale you can feel the warmth of the song through its piano instrumentation and heartfelt vocals. The song is about a person who hasn't yet moved on from a past lover but has finally decided to let go and simply wish for their ex's happiness. The song is also special for BtoB, as it is their first self-composed track created by Im Hyunsik and Jung Ilhoon.
10. Kim Sohee, Shihyun - Sweet Potato x 100
When we talk about Christmas one thing we shouldn't forget is food! Kim Sohee and Kim Shihyun, both former Produce 101 (S1 & S2) trainees, decided to share a warm and sweet song with their supporters, just like a sweet potato. The song is about being in a situationship and hesitating to confess their love, which makes it frustrating just like eating 100 sweet potatoes. They want to confess their feelings to each other and officially spend their White Christmas together as lovers. The song is a perfect addition to your Christmas playlist because of the use of bell sound as an instrument, plus Sohee and Shihyun's sweet and cute vocals.
How about you? What is your K-Pop Christmas song recommendation?
